Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC)
Goodcel Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC, commonly sodium carboxymethyl cellulose / cellulose gum) is an anionic water-soluble cellulose. Its molecular chain carries negatively charged carboxymethyl groups (-CH₂COONa), which endow it with strong hydrophilicity. It dissolves in both cold and hot water to form transparent, viscous colloidal solutions. Its performance is mainly determined by degree of substitution (DS) and molecular weight: higher DS brings better water solubility and electrolyte resistance, while longer molecular chains deliver stronger thickening capacity. Unlike non-ionic HEC, CMC is sensitive to high-concentration metal ions and strong acid, but it possesses unique anionic dispersing and anti-redeposition functions unavailable to neutral cellulose ethers.

Water-based latex paint, printing ink: Disperses pigments, prevents filler sedimentation, improves brush smoothness and sag resistance.
Paper sizing agent: Enhances paper surface strength, ink absorption and anti-blur performance.
2. Construction & Ceramics
Tile adhesive, gypsum plaster, self-leveling mortar: Retains water to guarantee full hydration of cement/gypsum, prolongs operable time and avoids surface cracking.
Ceramic glaze suspending agent: Stabilizes ceramic powder, prevents glaze precipitation during firing for uniform glaze layer.
3. Oil & Gas Drilling (Industrial high-viscosity CMC)
Used in water-based drilling/completion fluids: Acts as viscosifier and filtrate reducer, reduces water loss into rock formations, lubricates drill bits and stabilizes well walls to prevent collapse.
4. Food Industry
The most well-known application as permitted food additive E466:
Dairy & beverages: Stabilizes yogurt, fruit juice, milk drinks to prevent protein stratification and sediment; improves smooth mouthfeel.
Frozen desserts: Restrains large ice crystal formation in ice cream, sorbet for creamy texture.
Bakery & gluten-free food: Retains moisture, boosts dough elasticity, extends soft shelf life of bread, cakes; replaces gluten in gluten-free products.
Sauces, jams & dressings: Thickens fillings, inhibits sugar crystallization, maintains uniform suspension of pulp and oil droplets.
Edible coating: Forms thin protective film on fruits and vegetables to slow water loss and oxidation.
5. Home Care and Personal Care
Laundry detergent: Core anti-redeposition agent; wraps dirt particles to stop them re-sticking to clean fabrics, improves stain removal.
Liquid soap, shampoo, body wash: Adjusts viscosity, stabilizes foam, softens skin feel.
Dishwashing liquid: Enhances suspension of food residue and improves product appearance.
6. Pharmaceutical Industry
Tablet excipient: Binder for granulation, disintegrant and sustained-release matrix material.
Liquid medicines: Suspending agent for oral syrups, thickener for topical ointments and eye drops.
Wound dressings: Forms absorbent hydrogel film to retain wound moisture and promote healing.
7. Textile Printing & Dyeing
Sizing agent for yarns to increase tensile strength and reduce breakage during weaving; thickener for textile printing paste to fix color patterns evenly without bleeding.
